Would you let your kid steer the vehicle?

Would you let your kid steer the vehicle?

Postby Giggles on Fri Oct 23, 2009 12:06 am

My parents would always take me out to the country roads where nobody was around, and I got to sit on my moms lap and steer our van. lol Of course my mom drove super slow, and she kept her hands on the wheel in case I steered it off road.

I just heard a complaint about some woman doing that in my hometown with her 3 year old kid. I'm sure I'll do that with my daughter...

If it's not hurting anybody in any way, then why should it matter?!

Have you ever let your kid steer the vehicle while s/he was on your lap? If not, do you plan on doing that?

No. No. No. It's far too dangerous and irresponsible ( In my opinion anyway )

I used to drive in Africa when I was 10. But then there was NOTHING to hit.

I haven't been in that situation before, but I'd guess it would depend on the laws / airbags, etc.

A very 60s 70s thing to do...a time when you were not required by law to even buckle up your own seat belt.

No I wouldn't let my kid steer the car. And I think unless you are on private property you could get charged with a dangerous driving offence.

So nice fantasy, but think you better rethink it.

Sure; we did this once with our two-year-old. On our dead cul-de-sac, at 5kph. She loved it.

I let my 2 year old son "drive" around the yard. We have a big yard out in the country and I let him sit in my lap and drive around the house, not on the road. When I was younger I got to sit on my dad's lap and drive down our road when I was 4 or 5 years old. I will probably do the same thing with my son in a few years. It's not like you are letting him drive on the interstate...a country road is fine.

I am guilty :)

Just last week I let my son (almost four) sit in my lap and "drive". We were somewhere no one else would be driving and I remembered how fun it was when I was younger. He had a blast and I don't regret it one bit :) My son thought it was the coolest thing ever and had a huge smile on his face the whole time.

They're only young once :)
