Work situation...looking for some advice on what to do.?

I'm the receptionist for a small, private owned insurance company. Recently the boss partnered with a guy who has one of those "We buy Gold" companies. So on top of all my current work, today I got trained with 2 other ladies in the office on how to do a we buy gold business. Apparently, people are going to start coming in with literally bags of their gold - and we're supposed to determine if the gold is real (we have to run a number of tests to find out), also figure out the carat weight size, calculate how much money we'll pay them and then barter with them over it. Is it just me or does this seem wrong? I am truly uncomfortable with it - we are not in the jewelry business. I've already said I won't do it but the other 2 ladies are fine with it. Does this seem weird and unsafe to anyone else??

It is quite odd. Insurance &"We buy Gold" aren't exactly related fields. Can you ask your boss to let you work the insurance business only and not have to partake in the gold business. If you do end up buying gold find out what kind of action is taken for mistakes - what if you accidentally buy a fake item. Or what if your weight is off. Protect yourself.

that's totally wrong,you should all get together and refuse to to it,
i hope you have security entry,it wont take long for word to get around,and you could end up with a nut with a gun coming in

there is a large market for the type of service you folks are beginning. unfortunately, not all of those buying gold are reputable firms. i personally would never mail my gold to anyone, much less a firm i no absolutely nothing about, but that is just me. as long as your firm does what they say they are going to do, do not cheat anyone on weights or prices paid, and conform to your local laws and regulations, all should be fine.

Unsafe? How? Go ahead and say no...be replaced soon. I think you'd better decide how much you need the job. You CAN start looking for another job if you don't like it.
