No. They charge a fee because here in america, we are capitalists so companies have that right. Those of us who enjoy our xbox 360 gladly pay it. It's 50 dollars a year. If you can't afford that you've got no business owning an xbox. Plus, xbox has netflix. That alone is worth the charge in my opinion.

Why would it be free when there are so many people that are willing to pay for it? Sony's online multiplayer gameplay is improving, but it still doesn't have the following that XBOX live has. They have to make it good enough that people start using it instead before Live will be free.

i have an xbox 360 and ps3 i love my ps3 because i don't have to pay for anything wirless internet and all

Because microsoft knows we will pay, there are millions of people with gold membership. And we continue to pay for it, why would they make that free if it is earning them so much money? Plus if it was free Xbox Live may get a bit crowded. Usually when I play some Halo 3 live there are a good 50k people playing a certain game at one given moment. And each of those people pay how much? $16 per month? and that is a lot of money over one year...

Well Microsoft wants to make some form of money and making you pay to play online is a good way for them to make that money. A good tip is that you can keep making profiles and each profile allows you 1 free month of xbox live. but other than that i dont think it will ever be free because microsoft is evil.

well...truth is....xbox live will never be free because of extended services, and alot of useless features. Ps3, on the other had is free because it doesn't use these "extended services".
So there is pros and cons.
Pay to play with perfect qualtiy
or play for free. your call.

If XBOX Live were free (and the service were similar to that of a free service) I would cancel my account and head back to PC gaming. The fact that XBOX Live is fee-based is exactly what makes it so good. Reliability, more widely used, incredible games and game support from both the mainstream and independent arenas. It just doesn't get any better.

All that said, paying $50 is not required. Most of us know how to get it for free and have been doing so for years. THE legal way I might add. Feel free to message me if you'd like to get yours for free as well.

i doubt it will ever be free, too many people already pay for it why would microsoft openly take that loss?. I have a feeling that sony will probably start charging because theyve already dropped their prices a lot. The wii was originally free now its, i believe a one time 5 dollar fee.
