When's the best time to spray for weeds?

When's the best time to spray for weeds?

Postby LindaT on Fri Oct 23, 2009 4:14 pm

We've just had our first good rain of the season, and greenery is sprouting. Do I kill it NOW, or will the next rains (not expected for at least a week) just bring up MORE of it? I want to Roundup my acre before it has a chance to get away from me.

Do it twice a year. First time at the end of February, second time at the end of August. Works a treat.

Always spray at the very beginning of the growing season then you can wait the alloted time and plant out what you really want,BUT don`t forget Roundup is not a topical weedkiller it is a systemic and goes right to the root of the weed, this can take up to 3 weeks before showing signs of it working and more applications may be needed. Read the instructions.Experience has taught us to spray an area but to weed by hand and turn over another so we can alternate the planting and be productive for as long as possible.

I don't think weed killer works when it is cold. Anyway I never had any luck except on hot days.

roundup, (glyphosate) works best on early growth weeds before they get well established. roundup works better on grasses than on broadleafs. if you are looking for a complete burndown, you may want to mix roundup or generic glyphosate, use the 41 % concentrate with amine 2-4d weed killer. if you have thistle or any waxy leave weeds, add a few drops of dish soap as a surfactant to get the spray to bite in better. you will need to spray on a calm day as 2-4d will drift and can kill trees and any garden flowers or vegetables. you will notice a burndown within 24 hrs of the 2-4d application, and should have a complete burndown in 2 weeks. you can check with your county extension office (farm bureau) for further information.

The absolute best time for a "weed & feed" is in Fall. Also, in order to control weeds, cut your grass "high" (about 3") and cut it often. Healthy grass will keep weed seeds from germinating due to lack of sunshine.
