I have a home-based business with a social marketing company, and this is an option for anyone who's willing. Here are some pros and cons of this type of home-based business you may want to consider as you evaluate whether it's best for you:
=== PROS ===
- I have control over my income level (I choose to work part-time and am able to make a decent supplementary income, but I always have the option of earning more money by working full-time if I ever want to).
- I own my own company (which is an independent subsidiary of the parent company), so I can choose my own hours.
- My job is not subject to market whims; the all-natural products I represent (vitamins supplements, skin care cosmetics, non-toxic household cleaners, etc) are in demand even in tough economic times.
- These are consumable products, which means people reorder month after month, providing business security.
- My business is positioned to take advantage of the intersection of five of the fastest-growing consumer markets over the next 10 years (health wellness, anti-aging, green living, nutrition beauty, home-based business!)
- Product research and development, quality assurance, production, and shipping are all taken care of by the parent company's $500 million infrastructure.
- There is business development training and a great support system available to me. I love being around positive people!
- I often end up becoming friends with my customers, business associates and other marketers - there is a great team spirit.
- I love the high-quality products I market, and they are supported by a $-back guarantee, so I feel really good about sharing them with others.
=== CONS ===
- You spend a lot of time on the phone, which some are uncomfortable with. I had call-phobia when I started out, but thankfully there is training available that I took advantage of to help me overcome that.
- There is an upfront cost to join the parent company, but there are always organizational expenses when starting a business; and this cost is very reasonable compared to the cost of starting your own business from scratch or buying into a franchise.
- If you aren't self-motivated, then you won't have much success with this type of business model. There is no boss telling you what you have to do (of course, that can also be considered a pro :)
- While you can begin earning money immediately with this home-based business, the rate of return for time spent is not steady; at the beginning it is more modest (though still appealing!), but it grows exponentially so that further into your business experience, the rate of return potential is significantly higher.
So in a nutshell, a home-based business as a social marketer provides you with the benefits of having your own home-based business, but without the costs and hassles of getting started and being on your own.
