What to say to noisy neighbor?

What to say to noisy neighbor?

Postby Peanuts on Fri Oct 23, 2009 1:02 pm

this guy moved in below me about a week ago. he seems friendly enough but i have one problem - he seems to enjoy DIY late at night (anything up to about 2am) . should i wait and see if this settles down? or should i approach him about it and nip it in the bud so to speak? Any ideas of what I could say?

just be friendly and approach him about it...he may think that he is being quiet... if that doesn't work call the landlord... ask for an emergency number... and if your neighbor wakes you up at 2am... call your landlord and wake them up at 2am. They will fix the problem, if it affects them.

Seldom do I thumb down a peer---but Gordon-----he gave a great answer at first--waking up a landlord at 2AM for a noise complaint ? I would not expect a call at that hour unless its a true emergency like a flood or fire--anything else could wait till a normal hour....I would certainly be in a foul mood with you---and you would be viewed as a pain in the ass and would then nit-pic you for anything I can think of till you move...I repeat-do not call the Landlord at that hour unless its an Emergency.

You can say, "Hey, how'd you sleep last night? Did you hear all that sawing/drilling/hammering/whatever? Somebody was sure making a racket. I didn't get much rest. I hope they're finished with whatever they're doing. Well, gotta go..."

That way they get the feedback that the noise they're making is disruptive, but they are not put on the spot and you can keep your friendly rapport.

if it is an apt complex - he is probably violating noise rules - look at your lease and call apt mgmt

if it is a condo or something -same thing might apply - is there another neighbor connected to another side of his unit?

if no mgmt to go to, then you should address it with him and ask him to keep the noise down after 10pm - that is a standard noise ordinance time limit
