What does everyone have against mutts? :/?

Postby JenniferT607 on Sat Oct 24, 2009 1:45 am

The issue is not the value of mutts as pets. The issue is irresponsible breeding. The ONLY way to be a RESPONSIBLE breeder is to:

1. Contact a breed club for your breed. Ask for a mentor.
2. STUDY the breed standard. Learn about dog anatomy and ask your mentor to
clarify anything you don't understand.
3. Learn what genetic faults and diseases run in your breed and test for any
that can be tested for.
4. Show your dog in conformation events to see if it is of the proper
quality for breeding. Winning doesn't always mean a dog is breeding quality,
but being around so many others that know your breed and will talk to you
will do wonders for your self-education efforts!
5. Study the past history of great dogs in your breed. You will see how your
breed has improved and progressed since the beginning of the breed.
6. Study the breed standard some more! ;-)
7. Join any Yahoo groups about your breed.
8. Live, dream and study your breed.
9. Get a good book on canine reproduction, and educate yourself about the
pitfalls, problems, and proud moments of breeding. Learn about the
physiology of reproduction, such as heat cycles and venereal diseases in
dogs, potential for problems specific to your breed, and what you need to
expect at whelping.
10. Remember that whelping (giving birth) can kill your female. Being used
as a stud dog can encourage bad behaviors common in intact males such as
territorial marking, aggression, and desire to roam from home.
11. Prepare to be broke. Breeding properly is EXPENSIVE.
12. Line up potential homes for any puppies you produce and write up a
contract. Remember to include that you will be willing to take back your
puppies at any time in their lives that they might need you. If you bring
life into this world, it is your responsibility FOREVER.
13. Prepare to spend sleepless nights attending whelping females, caring for
fading puppies or puppies orphaned, and practice cleaning up after 24/7 poop
machines.

I'm sure there are many things I missed because being a responsible breeder
isn't just a job. It's a way of life. You will live dogs. 24/7/365. There
are lots of hard decisions. There is a lot of expense. There will be pain.
But, if you do your darndest to always keep the welfare of your dogs and the
future of any of their offspring, you can go to step 14.

14. Enjoy the love and success of a job well done.

I loved my mutts as much as I loved my purebreds, but I'd never, ever think it was right to make mutts on purpose. It's not right to breed MOST pure bred dogs on purpose. If you won't at the VERY least do genetic testing...not "the vet says it's OK"...GENETIC TESTING, do NOT breed.

Dogs are not people, no comparison.

Shelters populations are estimated at 80-90% mutts that were once cute puppies. For every human baby born, 7 puppies & kittens are born- every day. Can you see how quickly the problem grows?

Why add to the problem by breeding more mutts, when the shelters are euthanizing them today to make room for the ones that will be dropped off tomorrow?

We don't hate mutts. We hate the people who breed them without considering genetic health/temperament. They are badly bred, and as such should not be bred. They are not immune to genetic illnesses, in fact, a lot of the time, they have a bigger chance of being genetically unhealthy. The only exceptions, are working dogs, ie, Lurchers, Alaskan Huskies etc.

Reputable purebred breeders don't do it for the money, they do it because they love their breed, and want to strengthen and improve their bloodlines by breeding genetically healthy, temperamentally sound and stable dogs. Their dogs do not contribute to the overpopulation, and they never end up in shelters.

Please do not compare people to mongrels, they are not the same thing. People are not selectively bred for specific physical traits, drives, and instincts, dogs are.

There are too many badly bred dogs in this world getting killed every day, the world does not need any more.

"Mutts" are not the only ones dying in shelters!! Many people give up pure breed dogs! I love mutt....he was in a "foster home". they do the same as full breed, only they're unique!

Nobody has anything againist mutts.

I love mutts, I just don't like them being bred. There are too many mutts in the shelters as we speak and Lab/Lab mixes and GSD/ GSD mixes are at the top of the list. At our humane society, we have so many Lab and Lab mixes that whenever you go into there, that's practically about 65 to 70% of dogs that are there.

Your not thinking of the fact that if no one wants them, where do you think they will go ? You have no intention in keeping them, so as a result, they are shifted to the shelter where they are given limited time.

There's nothing wrong with mutts.

It's more of that a LOT of them are dying in shelters. EVEN PUREBRED DOGS are dying in shelters. Just because an animal has papers or a cute face doesn't mean it should be bred, which is what some people seem to think. Something needs to prove itself breeding quality before you breed with it. Would you go knock up (or get knocked up by) a person who is constantly in and out of drail for drug abuse and drunk driving, has a long history of abusing, and showers monthly? Even if they're the descendant of the queen of england? Exactly. One must prove itself worthy to breed before being bred.

i do agree, shelters are over run. To may dogs are dying because people won't get their dogs fixed! the poor things are then taking to a shelter and put down.

breeding should be done responsibly. bottom line...

Their is nothing wrong with mutts, just people hate to see them put down. and hate to see homeless dogs, it's not their fault that they were brought into this world, just because people think that they may be "cute". lol lame excuse.

I love mutts, I don't care what anyone has to say about my comments or what they think of mutts. MUTTS MAKE THE BEST PETSSS!

As I have said many times, I don't hate mutts! The problem is them being intentionally bred without a valid reason, a valid reason being farm/sled dogs being bred to do a job.

It doesn't matter if they are cute, the point is those "cute" puppies don't need to be brought into the world. They are thousands of mutts at shelters all over the world and breeding more is unnecessary.

The only breeding that should be done is the work breeding of farm and sled dogs or responsible pure breeding for the betterment of the breed.
