Stress fracture turned into completely broken foot?

Stress fracture turned into completely broken foot?

Postby AngieG on Sun May 10, 2009 1:19 am

Alright, so I've had a stress fracture in my left foot (second metatarsal, to be specific), and I've been wearing the air cast for about three weeks now. It rarely hurts anymore and was well on its way to being healed, I believe. Today, I had just gotten out of the shower and was walking across my apartment when all of a sudden, I heard a loud POP and then, excruciating pain. Exactly in the spot where my stress fracture was. I don't want to go to the ER and will visit my orthopaedic office on Monday, but in the meantime, I wanted some opinions. Most likely broken? There isn't really much swelling or anything, but I can't move my toes or really any other part of my foot without terrible pain, and it hurts constantly even when not being moved.

Sorry for long question.. thanks!

Forgot to mention I didn't have the boot on when this injury occurred.

Fracture is doctor speak for break. Many think a fracture is just a crack, but it isn't. If any broken bone heals improperly, the only way to get it "right" is to have it re-broken and set properly. You will now probably be in a cast. There was a reason for the air cast.

Put that boot back on! You sound exactly like me and my stress fracture. It is very possible for it to break or be damaged further. I started out with a very small stress fracture that an x-ray couldn't even pick up, I walked/ran/did everything I was supposed to do and I made it a lot worse and it shows on x-rays. I've spent 3wks in a walking boot, 4wks in a cast, and now another 4wks non-weightbearing. I'd see your doctor asap!
