So all garbage disposals fit any kitchen sink?

So all garbage disposals fit any kitchen sink?

Postby MrJMan on Sat Oct 24, 2009 1:57 am

I just want to confirm that most garbage disposals will work with any standard kitchen sink? The one I have now came with the house and it is model General Electric GFC320:

It appears to be jammed since when you hit the switch you can hear it humimg until it's own breaker kicks in eventually. I tried to use wire pliers to turn the wheel since it doesn't have a crank thing on the bottom to turn it. My inspector recommended that I buy a new one and I plan to do just that. My concern is with the power cord, since it goes straight into the unit like you can see here:

I think if I remove those two screws for the strain relief I will have access to the wiring to disconnect? I know the cutoff the power first. A garbage disposal is important to me since certain foods I buy are mixed in with other veggies that I do not like and when I throw those away they make my trash smell so I would like to wash them down the drain like I used to do in my old house. Thanks.

It was jammed before I moved in.

Take your garbage out. You have stopped up your disposal with the things you are sticking down it. You should slice those things up if you wanted to put those down there ! That thing is not an issenterator, it is a disposal, and notice there isn't two ll's in the word? You have something that has jammed it up. There are two different kind of tools that you can "free" the motor up. one is a Allen wrench, that fits in the bottom of the disposal, right in the middle, you can Move that around and free it up. If you don't have that kind of appliance, then you have a wrench that you can get and stick it into the hole in your sink and you can free it turning the teeth in it.

Any will work. The cord is called a pigtail. measure the one on yours. It would be smart to get another GE just a higher HP model. It will fit in the sink on the same flange making it a lot easier to install. I would pull the old one and head to home depot with it in my hand and match it up to a new one.
