Should I choose identical bridesmaids dresses?

Postby CC107 on Wed Oct 21, 2009 4:49 pm

personally I would pick something in a color that they can wear again. And a style that they like especially with the economy the way it is. If you are paying for their dresses then you can choose whatever style and color you want. If not then pick something they can use again it would show them that you care. I know everyone says Whatever its your day but no one likes a bridezilla. I am not saying anything casual but a classy style that will compliment their body styles and not make them look like an ommpa loompa.

Should I choose identical bridesmaids dresses?

I think you should consider your girls' body types and what will look good on them. Some styles look good on everyone. Some do not. A lot of brides these days simply choose a color, and have the girls wear different styles.

My cousin chose black, and each of her 7 bridesmaids wore a slightly different style. It looked fine.

Should I choose identical bridesmaids dresses?

This is what my sister did for her wedding. She looked at all the dresses at Alfred Angelo, then she chose a group of 4 dresses that she approved of. She had all of us go in and try them on and we emailed her our preferences. We listed the dresses in order of which ones we liked best to worst. Then she put our preferences together and tried her best to make us all happy. Every one of us had this same dress in our top 2, so she picked that one.

I picked the dress that they were going to wear however I was considerate of body shape and size. I let them choose what kind of straps they wanted and the length. Yes the bride should be able to pick the dresses BUT the girls have to wear them all day and be comfortable. You wouldnt want to wear something that made you fat all day infront of a bunch of people. Be considerate of that.

Well, you've expressed that you'd like each to wear the same dress style...which, is fine-you and your hubby really do have the final say.

That being said, you will want to really look at your bridesmaids. Are they all roughly the same body shape? If so, aim the dress to suit their one shape...but, odds are they are all different beautiful shapes and sizes. So, you'll want to find something that is universally flattering. A tea-length gown that hits approximately mid-calf will make all people look taller (and will make their legs look gorgeous!), and a gentle A-line is usually a safe bet for body types.

(For my wedding I just chose a color and a length and I let my girlfriends run wild-everyone had a totally different style dress and they looked fantastic!)

Identical is rarely the best way to make all the bridesmaids look their best, because not all women are the same shape and won't all look good in the same style. Plus, if you're making them pay for the dresses out of pocket, you should at least let them get something they'll be able to wear again.

When I was a bridesmaid I had to buy my own dress, and the bride just said to the three of us (two bridesmaids and a matron of honour), "Check things out with me first, and just make sure you all match reasonably." We all ended up wearing milk-chocolate-brown dresses in different styles (one short and sexy, one long and modest with a capelet, and one with a lace overlay), but they were all the same colour because that colour was in all the stores at the time.

My cousin did something similar at her wedding -- she had about half a dozen bridesmaids and another four or five flowergirls, and she took them all to a dressmaker who made them dresses out of the same colour and fabric (raspberry red) but in different styles depending on what they liked.

If you're paying for the dresses, you can be a little more choosy, but do them the respect of not making them wear anything too ugly or weird.
