Optimising page for search engines?

Postby RomanKirillov on Sun Oct 04, 2009 7:02 pm

Hi dear All,

I've got an assignment at uni - to build a webpage and optimise it for phrase 'mscais search engine'. So I did build the page:

http://www.dcs.bbk.ac.uk/~rkiril01/mscais-search-optimization/mscais_search_optimization.html

As far as I can see, it's not on Google or Yahoo! yet. I tried to use as many words "mscais search optimization" as I could, I also put a lot of links from the main page (http://www.dcs.bbk.ac.uk/~rkiril01/ - it had different assignment, but it's irrelevant for now). What ELSE can I do to make this page appear higher? (it's a competition and each student will try to make their page appear higher than others').

Many thanks in advance!

Upd: actually I've submitted the page to every search engine I knew and didn't get any meaningful results yet. Please help!! Deadline is 9th of October!

P.S. Thanks for fantastic answers! I understand I'm on very tight timescales, but I should do it this way or another :)

Optimising page for search engines?

the 9th is a pretty tight timeline for any
meaningful search results however that is
quite a different thing than simply doing
on page optimization.

1 - Put the search term in your <title> search term here </title> tags

2 - use the term in your headline.

3 - use it once in your opening paragraph

4 - use it and related terms within the rest of your
copy - not exactly generously , keep the tone
conversational - this will address lsi lsa issues
(linguistic semantic indexing and analysis)

5 - put the search term as the very last thing on your page.
under any terms or copyright info.

Not sure when your contest started but do not expect to see
actual search engine traffic from this page. your assignment
as you've stated is to optimize the page / not get it ranked.

Two different animals.

Hope this helps

write an article and submit it to ezine articles, mention the keyword prhase in the title and the first sentence of the article. 250-300 words ought to do it. mention the keywords in each paragraph, don't over do it. go to 'blogger' open a gmail account make a 100 word post about your keyword, when you do the article have your two links in the resource box point to your blog and your website. go to squidoo make a lens about your project, use 4 content boxes, one about your project that is factual, and titled "mscais search optimization", in your article that you submitted you are allowed to use anchor text, "mscais search optimization" as anchor text linking to your factual lens title, make the other 3 content boxes fun and personal but relevant to you topic.
writing ezine article = hour
opening ezine accout = half hour
google blogger open account and setting blog ready = 15 min
writing blog post = half hour
setting up squidoo lens 20 min
writing squidoo lens = hour

Properly optimizing your pages to make them “search engine friendly” can greatly increase your search engine rankings, traffic levels, and potential earnings from your website.
