Is 175 a normal number for a non-Diabetic?

Is 175 a normal number for a non-Diabetic?

Postby SoIwilldancewithCinderella on Mon May 11, 2009 12:03 am

I am worried because MY diabetes educator said a Non-D would NEVER go over 140 mg/dL. But today we checked my sisters and it was 175...this was accurate as we had washed her hands and re-checked just to make sure. Is this normal and my educator was wrong or is this high?

175 is high. Anything over 140 the doctor needs to check you or her out. Rather the machine is right or wrong you need to make sure with that number. MyGrandfather was s diabetic and it's important to have the doctor check it out.

175 for a non-diabetic is pretty high. If you just ate a big meal or consumed a lot of sugary foods before testing you're probably okay. You're insulin just hasn't kicked in yet. Just to be sure though, I would re-check your blood-sugar in an hour or so. If it hasn't dropped any you may be diabetic and should seek medical attention.. especially since it runs in your family.

Normal fasting is 80 to 110. Normal after a meal is 140. Anything over 126 fasting or 200 after meals is diabetic.

Anything in between those, is considered pre-diabetic or borderline. Of course, that's nonsense. You either have it, or you don't.

Normal blood sugar levels are different for different people, just like blood pressure, heart rate, etc. For a non diabetic, normal blood sugar range is anywhere between 80 and 180. 175 is on the higher side of normal, but is not dangerous nonetheless. If her blood sugar reaches above 200, then it would be a good idea to get her checked out, but as of now, 175 is not bad.

Also, if you had tested her blood sugar after a meal, even for non-diabetics, 175 is normal. Insulin is released by the pancreas when sugars are detected in the blood stream, and it usually takes 20 minutes for it to take effect.

175 is high. You shouldn't be seeing numbers like that diabetic or not!

You should make sure your meter is calibrated (instructions come with the meter). And you should also check her fasting blood sugar.

I would go ahead and start doing some regular measurements on her to make sure it was not a fluke or something related to food sensitivities (dairy, wheat gluten, and soy intoerlances especially) or infection (ie. rotten tooth, pneumonia).

That way, you'll have a better idea of what you are dealing with if you choose it necessary to go visit a doctor (bring that info with you).

Had she just eaten a meal in the last hour? If so, that's normal. If you check her 2 hours afterwards, she should be under 140.
