I want to start doing yoga?

Postby extraordinaire on Thu May 07, 2009 10:09 pm

can anyone tell me what kinds of yoga would be good for a beginner?

do I need to get a yoga mat or any other item? should I light incense while performing it too?

thank you for helping me.

look up bikram yoga in your city...give that a try...it's ninety minutes in a heated room...it's tough but you feel amazing when you walk out...the good part is the instructor talks you thru the entire 90 min program, all you ahve to do is just follow along...no thinking required.

I do yoga in my home by watching a DVD. I recommend a mat and water bottle. Wear loose fitting clothes and make sure the house is quiet. I don't use incense, but it sounds like a good idea. I consider myself a beginner.

Go to this website: www.yogaforbeginners.com and look through the basic postures. A yoga mat would be a good idea to prevent injury from hard surfaces and also it is cleaner than the floor..you dont necessarily need to light incense but you could to make you feel more relaxed..

I took a yoga class (hatha yoga) once and still practice it nightly on my dormroom floor. I don't use a mat because we have carpeting.
Based on my experience, the things that don't matter in helping me get in a state of relaxation or in helping me do the postures are: yoga mat, incense, decoration, lighting, extraneous noises (like cars going by or a neighbor playing loud music).
The things I find essential are: calming music, loose-fitting clothing without buckles or footwear (thin socks are ok, depending on what postures I'm doing), and the absence of non-yoga-doers in the room.
