How should I prepare the soil before planting my plants in order to avoid the weed from coming out as much?

Postby WisenSmart on Fri Oct 23, 2009 5:19 pm

Each time I plant my garden, I get all this weed which keeps me on my knees a lot.

I have pulled out all old plants and soil is clear of weed, but I wish I knew something to do to avoid all that weed before planting my new plants. Is there anything that has helped you with this issue? thanks

My daughter is a big fan of PREEN, Follow the directions on the container. It stops the weeds as they come through the soil.

Weeds are tough because even when you think you pulled out the root you may have shaken loose a new one that starts. I use a lot of mulch to help smother them. Also, in a new bed you can put down that landscaping fabric that smothers them. Here's more on weeds:

Disturb the soil as little as possible - each time you dig in it, you're bringing up new seeds which can then germinate. Don't leave a lot of space between your plants - nature abhors blank dirt and will make sure something grows in it. I like to put newspapers down around the plants and then mulch heavily. This will prevent any weeds that do sprout from getting light, and they will die. Any weed seeds that blow into the mulch and germinate there can just be plucked out and buried in the mulch itself to rot.
