Ulises is right but I'd like to add one thing. Don't rent a car for 3 months. That will cost you roughly what the car costs. I would buy one instead. You can buy a car for about 1,000-2,000--though I have a friend who has done better than that. Spend the first day in the DMV getting it registered for about $100. That's much cheaper. If you must rent one, negotiate like crazy. That could end the life of some cars so discuss getting a car on the end of its lifecycle. BTW car rentals sell cars too.
Realistically it depends on where you want to stay. I mean there is NYC hotels which are really pricy. You can't find a Hampton in Boston for less than $200. To be honest, to save some money--I'd stay in some campgrounds whenever possible. That would be about $30 a night and some have cabins and tents already set up and available so all you'd need is a sleeping bag. Buy that at a Walmart here for about $30. Much cheaper than in the UK.
From London to NYC, flights go all over the place. I've seen $300 flights and $1100 flights. It depends on how flexible you are with your times and dates. Personally I'd put a watch on that flight and get emails for whenever you get cheaper rates.
Fuel completely depends on the type of car you get. I'd say a good estimate is 2 tanks of gas a week and the average price of gas right now is $2.50. It's always about 30 cents higher in California. I'd say $65 a week. Impossible to say how much the price of gas will change in 3 months and if you stay in larger cities like NYC you'd use public transportation. But $780 for the time.
Hostels are roughly $10 a night but it isn't like Europe. We do not have very many hostels. Look that up before you leave and try to book as many as possible. Otherwise hotels (cheaper ones) will be roughly $100 a night.
Food- You can do $40 a day if you do it cheaply. Food is much much cheaper here than it is in the UK. You will pay less than half at a fast food place here than you do in the UK. We also have tons of places that are less than $15--steakhouses like Outback, sitdown fast food like Applebees and Chilis. Much cheaper than the UK.
As far as how much you spend, it's really going to depend on how much time you spend in each place. NYC and California are going to be far more expensive than the rest of the US. How many touristy things are you planning on doing? A Broadway show can run you $200, a trip out to the Statue of Liberty another $60. However walking around and watching the shows in Battery Park and touring FAO Schwartz is free.
