how do you get rid of the smell of wood from a new dresser?

Postby sexymija808 on Thu Oct 22, 2009 2:04 am

i bought a new dresser, for my baby's clothes, when I assembled the dresser there was no smell, I washed all her clothes and put it in the drawer, a few days later I went to put some other things in and there was a really strong smell of wood, and all her clothes smells like wood, I would hate to re-wash all her clothes for it to smell like wood again.

Febreeze the inside, or try cedar chips for a different wood scent. Also try leaving the drawers open for a few days so they can absorb the smell of the room.

Paint or polyurethane inside the drawers. It seals in the wood stink.

I don't believe that I actually know an answer to this, my wife uses potpourri cachets.

Leave the draws open for a few days or you can put a few fabric softener sheets in each draw. Baking soda is another possibility. Put a small amount of baking soda in an open jar to soak up the smell of the wood.

These are only possibility's. The wood smell may have to just wear off on it's own. Personally I love the smell of new wood. But that's me.

just set the drawers outside for a day and see if it helps.
if still too much just leave them outside, like in your garage for a few days.
it will be less noticeable but it may take e few weeks for it to be gone completely.

I personally love the smell of wood, but if you don't, I would think that airing it by leaving the drawers open would work eventually, but that could take ages.

Maybe buy some of those scented liners? (Not sure what scents they do!) You could make your own, with some cheap wallpaper lining paper, and spray them with something suitable... Maybe febreze or a dilute solution of your favourite fabric conditioner?

You could seal the insides of the draws by using some varnish.
You would need to use a low odour varnish, or you may only be replacing one unwanted smell with another
I am pretty sure these are freely available.

Good luck!
