How bad is it to do serious networking on facebook?

How bad is it to do serious networking on facebook?

Is it rude to network with a mentor on facebook?

I am a foreign student, I just found out that one of my role model, a successful entrepreneur is on facebook after I have wrote a note about him in which I explain why I find his career very special.

Given that he is orignally from my country, I was thinking about sending him a facebook message to ask tell him that I am looking for a mentor and If he doesn't mind would he like to network with me.

I can't find him on Linked In , so that's why I wanted to use facebook. My facebook profile is clean, no rude pictures or stupid comments from me or my friends on my wall.

Should I also show him that I wrote a note about him? I am about to graduate, I'd like to network with him or even have him as a mentor.

What do you think?

thanks

PS: I don't add random people on facebook, so my friend list is smaller than 130 , so he might not get the impression that I am going around adding random people if that can help

Most business people do not run their own facebook pages. Try other approaches such as going to different events his company hosts or just sending a personal snail mail letter. Facebook is great for connecting to old friends and associates but not for networking.

There is 99% chance that your message would be lost in the pool of 100s of messages he or (maybe his intern) receives one hour.
