H1N1 vaccine. Do you have a choice of nasal spray or a shot?

Postby MattD on Sat Oct 24, 2009 3:24 pm

I am getting the vaccination at my school on monday after school, and I really DONT want to get the nasal spray because I have never tried a nasal spray before. If anyone knows or has gotten the vaccination, do they give you a choice, or will it most likely be the shot?thnaks

They generally offer both. You cannot get a nasal spray for H1N1 and a nasal spray for the season on the same day however. You can get two shots (h1n1 and seasonal flu) on the same day, though in different arms.

H1N1 vaccine. Do you have a choice of nasal spray or a shot?

I did get the vaccine. Usually they will give you a choice. Some times if its a pediatrician, they only offer the spray. But, if it is just a normal doctor, usually they will offer both or just the shot. I think that the shot is better than the nasal spray, but the doctor's clame it both work. Usually they will leave the choice up to you, unless they only have one of the two. Hope I helped.

Matt - You're making wise choices. The intramuscular shot (injection) is my carefully considered choice. The shot dose is of "killed" virus and guarantees a carefully measured does entirely injected while a nasal spray of a weakened live virus gives uncertain absorption by the body. Early reports these past 2 months show that shots give higher levels of antibody production than the spray. Likely you will have a choice. If only the spray is available, then take it as a second best choice.

flu spray is a fine choice for those age 2-49 yrs of age...talk to your doctor first. you must be healthy and not pregnant. And take vitamin D. More than what comes in your typical daily multivit. Research it.
