Greenboard or Hardibacker for shower ceiling?

Greenboard or Hardibacker for shower ceiling?

Postby ediesellers2 on Fri Oct 23, 2009 2:29 am

Remodeling our bathroom. I know we can't use greenboard for the walls of our shower where we're tiling, so we're using Hardibacker. However, should we be using greenboard on the ceiling or is that too damp (we're not tiling the ceiling)? If not greenboard, what should we use for the shower ceiling?

Also, in the rest of the bathroom walls and ceiling where we're not tiling, should we be using greenboard there? And what should we be using: 1/4" or 5/8" board? Not quite sure on the uses of the different thicknesses.

To clarify: We have 10 foot ceilings. We are using Hardibacker/moisture membrane inside the tub area to 6+ feet. Above that in the shower we're aiming at greenboard. The rest of the bathroom will be done in greedboard. We are also putting in a fan, as eventually we will remove the one oversized window in the bathroom (it's useless and opens only to a blank wall of the apartment building next door five feet away. Gotta love 100 year old planning, huh?)

Greenboard or Hardibacker for shower ceiling?

In the shower, I would be using the hardibacker board and tile, especially if it's cloesd inand lots of moisture. The rest of the washroom can be done in greenboard.
And 1/2 inch is good. Unless it's a ceiling below the attic then you need to use 5/8.

Greenboard or Hardibacker for shower ceiling?

Postby JeffN694 on Fri Oct 23, 2009 4:04 am

Hi,
I use greenboard in the bathroom everywhere I can. I do use greenboard "IN" the shower but I paint it with exterior paint and silicone the joints. It works fine if you are doing large tile 12x12 or larger. When I build in seats in the shower I cover it in hardibacker and coat it with silicone. 5/8" greenboard is always better than 1/4".

!/2" green board and a couple coats of a very good paint to help take the moisture. I will recommend you tile to and on the ceiling since your doing it most the way up there now ( to at least 6 foot I m hoping). Unless you have a fan or nine ft ceilings, id recommend you do the rest.
Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
