frozen chicken, dirty looking meat?

frozen chicken, dirty looking meat?

Postby Mike on Sat Oct 24, 2009 7:15 am

ive been buying frozen chickens from tesco and although the sell by date is well in advance, when the bird is cooked the meat near the bones is black and dirty looking, is this a sign of old age, or blood contamination of the bird, and is it wise to eat it ?

frozen chicken, dirty looking meat?

It's probably bits of residue from when the bird was cleaned. As it's frozen it will just stay inside the bird packed into ice. If you buy a fresh bird it's less likely you'll get that. Make sure you wipe the bird inside and out with kitchen paper before you cook it. Never wash poultry as this can cause bacteria to grow. I'm sure it's safe to eat providing you have cooked it really well and that no pink juices run out from the thickest part like the leg when you insert a skewer.
