Sea salt soaks are really what are best for piercings. You don't need to take the back off when you clean it. Just get some non-iodized sea salt and do the soaks.

However, swelling and soreness does not mean infection. Usually the main signs of infection are excessive redness (some is normal), hot to the touch, and yellow/green puss. Maybe people think their piercings are infected when they really are just healing or might be a little irritated.

do the saline soaks. lobes usually take i little longer than they tell you. and it's normal for one side to be good while the other struggles. go to safepiercing.org for aftercare and what to avoid.
usually, the crap they give you isn't that great. i wouldn't recommend it at all.
