A DVD-5 disc is a single-sided single-layer disc, with an actual usable size of about 4.3 GB. A DVD-9 (also known as DVD +DL) disc is a single-sided dual-layer disc, with an actual usable size of about 7.9 GB.
As you can see here, the DVD-9 disc has a little under double the capacity of the DVD-5 disc. However, to burn a DVD-9 disc, your DVD burner must support burning a dual-layer disc. Most burners in the last couple of years will do DVD +DL (dual-layer), but double check your drive before purchasing DVD-9 media.
