Do I need a foundation kit for my storage shed?

Do I need a foundation kit for my storage shed?

Postby kitty on Sat Oct 24, 2009 12:15 am

I have a Rubbermaid storage shed, but my yard is abit uneven and so I put lumber under the sides. Is it fine the way it is?

I have no supports under the back or front, just around the edges on each side. It is stable, but now stands about 12 inches above ground on one side about about 8 inches on the other. It only has kids bikes and stuff and other than when I step in it to get something from the back, it won't have alot of weight in it.

Should I get a foundation kit or is it fine with with lumber on the sides only, to make it level enough?

The way you describe the setup it doesn't sound very secure at all. The entire base should be supported if you want it to last.

It depends on what you want to store in it. Normally, they are fine the way they come, but you can add a foundation or level the ground off, either by yourself or have someone do it for you (some can be reasonable and some outrageous). Just storing "junk" won't need a lot. But, if you plan to store a large lawn-mower or other larger machine, you may want to so it will have more support, as time wears on.

However, if you put a foundation under it, leveled or not, you may have to get a permit for building it. In some areas, the government demands a permit for anything, others just for permanent buildings, and some only for buildings that people live in. In those grossly immoral and uncontrolled areas, formerly known as free America, you can just build anything and do not need to expend thousands of dollars to comply with local laws. Even the Feds get into the act today, as a mobile home is "junk" until it has a foundation, and then they will finance it and provide other services, that you would think you pay taxes for anyway. :)

For me, an old miser, I would level it "on stilts" and just provide a small ramp, and not fool with a permit and all, which usually costs way more than the building does. Just depends on your needs and such.
