Blood sugar should never go over 140mg/dl (7.8mmol/l). If it does, the patient is in one of the various stages of diabetes.

Diabetes Question. Please help.?

The American Diabetes Association has tightened up a little on the numbers, good control should be 90-150<after eating and an AC1 of 6.5, this is a number that measures the last 3 months average of your readings, no hiding from the doctor's, I thought the 70's were low, but my doctor likes seeing those numbers, I know if untreated in men, you could develop ED, I ate chocolate daily until my feet went numb, thankfully from a fall, going for a little surgery next week on the back, but it was a wake up call on the diabetes. I want to keep my hands and feet and eyes and kidney's, so I limit my intake of chocolate now. It's kind of like going to AA for drinking, you have to take it one day at a time!

Acceptable blood sugar levels are NOT determined by age. It is the same for everyone, young or old, skinny or fat, it doesn't matter. I think (but I am not sure, I am new to diabetes myself) that normal is 75 - 120 or a A1C test of 7.0 or smaller. Have your friend tested by his Doctor as the doctor is the only one who for sure can tell him if he is diabetic.

Here are the ranges for blood sugar levels:

Normal Fasting BG = 70-99 mg/dl - BG 2 hours after eating = <140 mg/dl

Prediabetes Fasting BG = 100-125 mg/dl - BG 2 hours after eating = 140-199 mg/dl

Diabetes Fasting BG = > 126 mg/dl - BG 2 hours after eating = > 200 mg/dl

There are many things that can be done to help control it like regular exercise, understanding how foods will affect you, medication, and natural supplements to help fill in the nutritional gaps.

Regular exercise helps in many ways some are that it improves your body's insulin use and burns excess fat and calories which will help to improve insulin sensitivity in your body.

There are many things you should know about how foods will affect your blood sugar levels many know about carbohydrates, but don't understand the effects of coffee, fruits and vegetables, and proteins. It's important that you learn about these and many others.

Some doctors believe that diabetes is a nutritional deficiency disease so if you are not getting what your body needs from foods that you eat than perhaps looking into natural supplements will fill in the gaps.

Cinnamon, alpha lipoic acid, and b-complex are a few of them that will help control blood sugar levels. There are many others that also have benefits for diabetics.

Here are some webpages that will give you more information to help you learn about diabetes and all of your options.

After fasting for 12 hours, and I mean, nothing, an ideal glucose reading would be 80 or less. If it is 145 or over then you may have pre diabetes, which doesn't go away without treatment. Anything over that reading is full blown diabetes 2. A diet high in complex carbs and fiber, plus exercise is an effective way of controling this disease, although at some point medication is neccesary.
