Cause of asymmetrical hair loss?

Cause of asymmetrical hair loss?

Postby lesterboose on Tue May 05, 2009 11:52 pm

I am a 62-year-old male. Five years ago, I rather suddenly lost a strip of hair on one side of my head (actually starting with a patch of lost hair in the eyebrow, and extending up past the crown).

It has never come back despite treatment by a dermatologist and attention to diet, rest, combating stress, etc.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could cause this type of hair loss, clearly unrelated to typical male pattern baldness?

Not quite sure what your dermatologist's opinion was about this, but I'll mention a couple of possibly related conditions (that I'm sure your doctor was well aware of, so are almost certainly wrong):

The first is Alopecia Areata, which is an auto-immune disease in which hair follicles are attacked by white blood cells. This can be a progressive disease, and your condition doesn't seem to be progressing.

Telogen Effluvium is a metabolic disease. You've addressed the diet issue, but thyroid problems, medications, anemia, etc., can also be involved.

I've listed a few web sites that might be useful for you, but I suggest you get your doctor's opinion of the exact terminology for your particular condition and use Google to find more information.
