Can diabetes cause this...?

Can diabetes cause this...?

Postby MWMbms on Sun May 10, 2009 5:16 pm

I was recently diagnosed w/diabetes (Type II), but went undiagnosed for almost a year after 2 pregnancies w/gestational diabetes...during this time and up until i was diagnosed w/Type II i had horrible joint pain.

Though my diabetes is under control now w/diet, exercise and medication my joint pain is still there. It's really bad in my hips, usually the right side.

I'm not old by any means, only 31. I do walk quite a bit, but i was wondering if this could be one of the many things that happens when you have diabetes.

Is joint pain normal? I will be discussing it w/my doc in June at my next appointment, but wanted to get experiences from other diabetics.

thnx

Thank you Aim. I have had my Thyroid checked. it all started because i was working out 4 times a day over the course of 8 months and only lost 5lbs. the Thyroid was the first thing he checked, this is why it took so long to diagnose diabetes, he was sure it was something else.

but thank you for the information.

This is completely out in left field to your question on diabetes, but I would suggest you make sure your thyroid is working appropriately. Hypothyroidism can affect your sugars and your joints...a laundry list of issues...and TSH is NOT a thyroid hormone, so when your doctor says your TSH is fine, it means nothing. You want to check your free T3 and free T4 (notice FREE) and go from there. I'm attaching the website with the labs you want to ask for...feel free to peruse the rest of the site.

I'm not sure about hip joint pain, but I do know that diabetics are more prone to developing adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) than non-diabetics. (This doesn't, of course, that non-diabetics don't develop it.)

I'd suggest you mention the pain to your doctor to see if there's any related condition that's causing you pain.

With adhesive capsulitis, it's important that movement is continued as the shoulders can become very difficult to move ... and very soon after mobility becomes more and more limited. (I had great difficulty using my right arm to use in brushing my hair. This was successfully treated after multiple corticosteroid injections and manipulation under general anaesthetic, though my mobility is still somewhat limited.)

By the way, you've got an interesting profile, dear lady. (I bet people will be hopping over to read it now. lol.)

Best of luck to you for a healthy future ... free of complication(s).

Can diabetes cause this...?

Being diabetic puts you at risk for other autoimmune disorders like rheuamtoid arthritis, lupus, sarcoid's, myositis, ect....all of these disorder cause pain to joints and muscles. Go to a rheuamtologist to get checked out.

Diabetes doesn't cause these, it just makes it easier for your body to get them. There is good treatments out there so you don't have to keep being in pain. I have sarcoid's and myositis on top of t1. I use to be in so much pain I could barely walk and my hips hurt terribly. Now that they figured out what was wrong with me the pain is all gone and I feel great.

1---Yes, diabetes can affect your bones and the joints, so talk to your doctor, if you went awhile and was not diagnosed with any diabetes and it was found later in the stage of Diabetes, yes it will effect your entire body.

I am a Type II diabetic and have been for over 20 yrs now.

I have researched and studied it to the end of my ropes.

The blood sugar, when it is stays constantly high, the sugar can crystalize in your blood stream, attaching to the walls of your blood veins, and can also attack bones with it.

And the TSH, does mean something, it means your are in the accepted levels of your blood sugar count....and also, you need to keep your Cholesterol down and under 8.0, as low as you can, this can also effect you blood sugar.

The doctor needs to run your blood work every 6 wks to make sure the sugar, Cholesterol, and your urine count is normal...If any of this is elevated, it will cause damage to your body.

I keep my blood sugar down really good, I exercise, I run 2 miles per day and do all my home work out equipment exercises, I do not miss a day.....I do not touch sugar at all, all sugar free treats, no caffeine at all, I take one Actos 45 mg per day, and my blood sugar stays in the high 70's to 84 always.....You do not want it to ever go over 120, and some doctors will tell you this as well, that is called a safe zone

Ask your doctor to run a Full Panel every 6 wks and you will fine, don't let it go more than 6 wks, this will keep a good time frame for diabetes.

Go to the American Diabetes Web Site, it is great, and they help so many.....

And be sure your doctor is running a urine sample every six weeks,,this tells him if your kidneys are functioning well as well, and will also keep a watch if any liver damage is apparent, which diabetes can also affect your liver.

Your doctor, since he now knows your a diabetic will know which panels to run and keep a close watch on it.

The Free 3 and Free 4, will not give you a full panel on the tests, you need to ask your doctor to give you a Full Panel Workup every 6 wks.

And do not let people tell you, diabetes is due to being overweight, it is not the cause, it is caused from the Pancreas not functioning and not producing insulin into your system....so while being overweight does not help diabetes, it is not the main cause,

I am 104 lbs, and have been small most of my life, and look at
Halle Berry, Mary Tyler Moore, both diabetics and they have always been tiny, and Halle Berry is such a bad diabetic, she has to take 5 insulin shots a day, and Mary Tyler Moore she takes 3-4 per day.
good luck...
