they eventually give themselves away to a trained person, tho

Well there certainly are ways of telling if someone's lying to you; body language, consistency of story, reported symptoms. It's also so rare that almost by definition they are faking.

People are most likely to report dissociative fugue when they are accused of commiting a crime...or there is some other advantageous reason to 'not remember' - and in these situations it is ALWAYS viewed as suspicious.

I wouldn't want to do this. The trained professional talks/assesses you over many sessions. To maintain the fake illness over a long period of time would be very difficult to do. What would you do if the trained professional finally believes you and diagnoses you and gives you some potent psychotic drugs? You will get very ill, and then have a very real problem on your hands.

If you want to have a visit with a mental health professional...you don't actually have anything wrong with you. Anyone can go and talk about their life, thoughts, etc.

In Canada we have community mental health. It is free for anyone to access. No referral needed, just call up and make an appointment.
