they are brakish water fish, this is not a set up for a begining fish keeper and will require extra weekly maintnance. they need a steady diet of snails or there teeth will grow so long they will kill it. they need a minimum of 20 gallons you cannot keep any other fish with it. Pufferfish are extremly aggressive they will eat fish twice their size. you might think about getting a freshwater dwarf puffer/s instead. but you must still feed it snails. No matter what you decide you will need to cycle the aquarium for at least a week before adding fish.
im not try to be condasending, but does your nephew know that the puffer fish will never "puff out"
i had a cousin who was trying to scare the puffers in the store into "puffy out", i had to explain to her how unhealthy that is to them. she was really young then she knows better now ;-}

That is the link page to what you need to know about the fish.
It's not freshwater or saltwater, it's a brackish fish (a combination of fresh and saltwater)

You need a hydrometer to meter out the proper salinity.

ok well even if you got him one its doubtful it would live very long since you havnt even cycled your tank yet.

puffers are brackish water fish but also do well in a freshwater setup

its really not a beginner fish, so you gota think will he be more upset if he doesnt get one, or will he be more upset when it dies in two weeks
